ENGRD101. Fall 2024. Sections 27 & 31.
Making my quadriptych comic was fairly straightforward. The hard part of making any of these comics is creating a story that can be put into just a few panels. The story has to be simple enough yet also intriguing. For this specific comic, I chose the storyline first. I then planned out what would be […]
Read moreThesis: David Small draws and Tillie Walden skates, but Small loves drawing while Walden hates skating, therefore the way a person experiences life impacts the amount of joy they can get from certain activities. I argue that based on a person’s life and the challenges they face, their problems can either be resolved or exacerbated […]
Read moreOver the fall break, I made brownies with my boyfriend. Like every time I bake, I run into issues with determining how long to leave the food in the oven. The box is never any help. I thought it would be cute to play with my own struggles with…
Read moreI was eating Flavor Blaster Goldfish in my room with friends around. I was thinking about what I should use for my second sketch, and I thought about how I like Goldfish. I thought it would be cute to make a little school of fish under water. I added a few other sea creatures, seaweed, […]

Although the two authors convey the drastically different struggles […]
Read moreWhen I started this analysis, I chose the panels from Stitches and Spinning because they stood out visually, not necessarily because I saw an immediate connection between them. I was drawn to the powerful imagery in each and the discussions we had about these pages in class. It wasn’t until I began to closely examine […]
Read moreDavid Small’s Stitches and Tillie Walden’s Spinning use the visual aspect of comics solely in these selected pages without relying on words to convey the emotional weight of these moments in time through angles and frame composition in each panel. On page 22 of Stitches, David is shown in the second panel at a high […]
Read moreHere is The Price of Personal Perception. Both Spinning and Stitches explore themes of adolescence and perception, but Stitches addresses the connection between how we perceive ourselves internally and how people perceive us externally, therefore Small understands more thoroughly how he wants to be perceived. Because Small is many years removed from when this novel takes place, whereas Walden has barely moved […]
