Week Ahead: 11

11 11/4 Kindred — Introduction, Prologue, The River, The Fire (4-57) Data gathering for sketch 8
11/6 No class

Note that I rearranged the schedule for the next few weeks and switched the order of Kindred and Sabrina.

Kindred is the first fictional text we are reading this semester. It’s also the first adaptation and the first book created by a team — every other book we have or will read this semester is a solo author text, where one person is responsible for writing and drawing every aspect of the comic. Octavia Butler published the novel Kindred in 1979. It was adapted into a comic by Damian Duffy and John Jennings in 2017. As you start Kindred, you might think about how those differences impact you as a reader.

Note that Kindred deals with slavery in the United States and as such includes stark depictions of violence, rape, and racist language. There is also some nudity.

Also, keep gathering data for sketch 8, which will be due in week 12.
